Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Library

This Guide provides basic guidance for Artificial Intelligence at Nipissing University & Canadore College Libraries

Welcome

According to the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL), "Traditional forms of AI are already in use in many task-specific library applications as well as in everyday life; the affordances of generative AI have distinct implications. Traditional AI and generative AI differ in their respective capabilities and applications. Whereas traditional AI systems are primarily applied to analyze data and make predictions, generative AI uses its training data to create new content. Though generative AI is a powerful tool that will only grow in importance, both forms of AI, with their different capabilities and applications, can work in tandem and are not mutually exclusive." (CARL, 2023).

Generative artificial intelligence (GAI) is an ever-changing and adapting world we all encounter every day. GAI relies on models that can create new content in the form of text, media, code, etc. and is used in a variety of globally popular tools such as ChatGPT, DallE2, or Gemini/Bard.

This Guide is intended to help students, faculty, and staff at Nipissing University and Canadore College to navigate the quickly evolving terrain of generative AI. It provides an overview of popular AI research tools, offers guidance on crafting prompts in these tools, and points out key library databases and e-books on AI. It also supplies resources related to core AI ethical issues. As with AI itself, this Guide will continue to change as we move forward into the future.
