Why Citing is Important

It's important to cite sources you use in your research for several reasons:

  • To bring credibility to your work by showing your reader you've done ethical research by listing sources you used to get your information
  • To show your understanding of the subject and the roadmap of the research you've accomplished
  • To be a responsible scholar by giving credit to other researchers and acknowledging their ideas
  • To avoid plagiarism by quoting words and ideas used by other authors
  • To allow your reader to track down the sources you used by citing them accurately in your paper by way of footnotes, a bibliography, or a reference list which proves credibility of the work and lays the groundwork for future research on this subject

The shared Nipissing University and Canadore College campus sits on the territory of Nipissing First Nation, the territory of the Anishnabek, within lands protected by the Robinson Huron Treaty of 1850. We are grateful to be able to live and learn on these lands with all our relations.
